2008 Campaign Theme

Human Rights for Women - Human Rights for All: UDHR60

Print Version in PDF:
English

Print Version in Microsoft Word:
English
The 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a historic moment, recognizing the past six decades of work to secure the conventions and treaties that make up the human rights framework. The principles of the declaration also gave legitimacy to activists around the world who were calling for the realization of universal human rights.

On December 10, 2007, a civil society campaign was launched to celebrate the upcoming 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This project is pioneered by a group of notable activists known as "The Elders" and seeks to reclaim the principles in the UDHR through the message that Every Human Has Rights. The Center for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) is proud to be a partner in this UDHR60 NGO campaign, which comes at a time when the legitimacy of both women's rights and human rights are being challenged in too many settings.

Human rights cannot be universal without human rights for women.  The UDHR60 campaign offers an opportunity to advocate for women's rights and the quest to end gender inequality, and to create a world free from violence, discrimination and injustice. These are critical to building a just, peaceful and sustainable world where human rights for all are respected.  Over the past 60 years, women have created groundbreaking global and local efforts to challenge gender inequality and feminist approaches to human rights are being developed and used around the world.  Women's advocacy has brought about pioneering change in areas such as education, health, law, and political participation – and, in interpretations of the human rights framework itself.  The global frameworks for realizing women's rights have been spelled out in the Women's Convention (CEDAW), and in documents from other UN processes, such as the Vienna Human Rights Declaration, the Cairo Programme of Action, theBeijing Platform for Action, the Millennium Development Goals, and the World Summit.  Women have successfully demanded state political will to create meaningful change, but the implementation and resources to fulfill these promises are still lacking.
CWGL's focus in this UDHR60 campaign is not exhaustive, but what we will do is build on, celebrate and honor this global momentum, particularly in areas most closely related to our work on women's human rights. In addition, we will dedicate the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign 2008 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the UDHR and to make demands to advance women's human rights.  CWGL's primary areas of focus will be:
  • Support Women Human Rights Defenders
  • End Violence Against Women
  • Strengthen Gender Equality Structures in the UN
  • Expand Financing for Gender Equality
Recognizing that the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign provides an opportunity to bring global activism around women's rights to the forefront of the celebration of UDHR60 on December 10 2008, we invite all to join in celebrating the anniversary of the Declaration and honoring decades of landmark women's rights advocacy. We encourage groups to focus their plans for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign 2008 on activities that address the many human rights challenges facing women around the globe and to celebrate the leadership of women in defending human rights.
Please see the 2008 Take Action Kit for more details on each of these ideas, including actions tailored especially for the 2008 16 Days Campaign.
The kit will be available online and in print in August – contact the Center for Women's Global Leadership at the address below to request a kit:

15/10/2008 Rural Women’s Day to be celebrated on October 15
To attract maximum attention of policy-makers towards issues faced by rural women, civil society members Wednesday joined hands to celebrate the International Rural Women’s Day falling on October 15.

In this regard, the Potohar Organisation for Development Advocacy (PODA) called for collaboration at the first consultative meeting organised to discuss the matter. Representatives of civil society and others attended the meeting.

They suggested that through this platform, more and more rural women should be allowed to speak about their daily life experiences and the problems they face while experts should draft policy guidelines in the light of those tales.

They participants said that the two-day event would comprise several sessions focusing on diverse issues related to rural women like land rights and access to basic health facilities.

“It should be a combination of intense discussions on policy matters and entertainment activities like theatre and festival to celebrate the contributions made by these women for providing food security to rest of the country,” they said.

Talking to ‘The News,’ PODA Director Samina Nazir said that women constitute 50 percent of the population and from that percentage the majority resides in rural areas. “These women play tremendous role in the agriculture sector but unfortunately their contributions are missing from government records.”

She said that technology had surely crept into the agriculture sector in recent years but men mainly controlled that. “Women are still involved in the most tedious and labour intensive agriculture work like weeding, seed sowing or cleaning and storing grains,” she pointed out.

Ms Nazir regretted that the literacy rate of women in rural areas was only 27 percent and access to basic services was very limited. “To create a bigger impact this year we are seeking partnership from NGOs and donor agencies,” she said.

Highlighting the objectives behind observing the day at the national level this year, she said that there was a dire need to acknowledge the hard work of women in Pakistan. “The aim is to demand that the government of Pakistan adopt a policy for the rights of rural women and recognise their contributions to national economy.”

15/10/2008 1st National Conference on World Rural Women Day in Pakistan

Invitation to join the 1st National Conference on World Rural Women Day in Pakistan

      Wednesday, 15 October 2008 - Islamabad

Potohar Organization for Development Advocacy (PODA) works for the promotion and protection of human rights of rural communities in Pakistan. We feel very strongly that the important and significant contribution the rural women make to Pakistan should be promoted and recognized. We believe it is necessary to raise awareness at all levels about the critical role that rural women play in Pakistan.

Therefore, we are delighted to announce that PODA is organizing a celebration of World Rural Women Day at national level on October 15th 2008 in Islamabad collaboration with ActionAid and Lok Virsa. I am writing to invite your organization to join us in observing this memorable day in Pakistan.

The World Rural Women day was proclaimed by the United Nations in1995 at the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing. A year later the United Nations announced 15th October as the World Rural Women Day. Since then every year many countries observe this day nationally. We are organizing a national level conference to observe this day for the first time in Pakistan in a large scale in order to draw the attention of Pakistani policy makers and to highlight the challenges and contributions of Pakistani rural women. At the end of the conference we will present a draft resolution to all the participants to demand that the government should declare October 15th as National Day for Rural Women and also announce a policy addressing the specific needs of rural women in Pakistan.

The 1st National Conference to mark World Rural Women Day in Pakistan will be held at Lok Virsa, a national institute folk heritage in Islamabad. A series of events are being organized by Lok Virsa, PODA and ActionAid representing rural women from all parts of Pakistan. We are anticipating the participation of a large number of Pakistani groups, national and international NGOs, government representatives, policy makers, academia and the media, concerned politicians and international organizations. Following are some of the ways that you can choose to participate in this conference on 15th October, 2008:

    1. Participating Organizations:

Any organization that wants to display its work and products related to rural women, rural development or other related issues can rent a Booth for the whole day at the cost of Rs. 5,000 only. The cost covers one table, two chairs, a booth covering the table and a place to hang your banner, badges, tea and lunch for two staff of your organization during the day.

    1. Village Organizations:

Any organization that works on rural women issues and is located in a village or small town can participate in this conference free of cost. We will offer a booth free of cost to village based NGOs or community organizations. However, we are NOT able to provide any travel or lodging to village based groups. We will be happy to suggest affordable accommodation and other logistics in Islamabad. Please feel free to contact if you need help with logistics.

There are limited seats available for this category so please let us know at your earliest if you can nominate any rural woman activist or artisan.
