Rural Women’s Day to be celebrated on October 15 |
To attract maximum attention of policy-makers towards issues faced by rural women, civil society members Wednesday joined hands to celebrate the International Rural Women’s Day falling on October 15.
In this regard, the Potohar Organisation for Development Advocacy (PODA) called for collaboration at the first consultative meeting organised to discuss the matter. Representatives of civil society and others attended the meeting.
They suggested that through this platform, more and more rural women should be allowed to speak about their daily life experiences and the problems they face while experts should draft policy guidelines in the light of those tales.
They participants said that the two-day event would comprise several sessions focusing on diverse issues related to rural women like land rights and access to basic health facilities.
“It should be a combination of intense discussions on policy matters and entertainment activities like theatre and festival to celebrate the contributions made by these women for providing food security to rest of the country,” they said.
Talking to ‘The News,’ PODA Director Samina Nazir said that women constitute 50 percent of the population and from that percentage the majority resides in rural areas. “These women play tremendous role in the agriculture sector but unfortunately their contributions are missing from government records.”
She said that technology had surely crept into the agriculture sector in recent years but men mainly controlled that. “Women are still involved in the most tedious and labour intensive agriculture work like weeding, seed sowing or cleaning and storing grains,” she pointed out.
Ms Nazir regretted that the literacy rate of women in rural areas was only 27 percent and access to basic services was very limited. “To create a bigger impact this year we are seeking partnership from NGOs and donor agencies,” she said.
Highlighting the objectives behind observing the day at the national level this year, she said that there was a dire need to acknowledge the hard work of women in Pakistan. “The aim is to demand that the government of Pakistan adopt a policy for the rights of rural women and recognise their contributions to national economy.”

Father’s Day to be celebrated on 21st |
The Youth Advocacy Network (YAN) and the World Population Foundation (WPF), Pakistan, have decided to join hands to celebrate World Father’s Day on June 21.
Based on the theme ‘My Father — My Source of Knowledge,’ the main focus of the event is to encourage fathers to provide right information to their children at the right time. The event will also serve as a platform for imparting knowledge on effective parenting techniques, a subject on which an interactive poster and documentary will be launched.
By observing World Father’s Day, the organisers hope to highlight the role of a father in the upbringing of children. The event will provide an opportunity to bring children, mothers and fathers on a same platform as the involvement of both parents in educating their children on the need to adopt healthy lifestyles is essential for improving the quality of children’s lives.
Pakistan currently has the largest group of youth in its
history, with nearly 54.2 million individuals aged between
10-24 years. By 2025, this number is expected to rise to 64.8 million. Young people everywhere have aspirations and want to activity participate in their societies.
They are the key agents for social change, economic development and technological innovation. Young people in Pakistan are the most vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections, HIV and AIDS, unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions, and sexual violence. This scenario makes it imperative for parents to play in role in providing their children with the right kind of information at the right time.
In order to share the current situation of issues related to youth in Pakistan and to determine what can be done to improve the situation, YAN and WPF have planned a briefing at WPF’s office on June 16, well ahead of the World Father’s Day event scheduled on June 21 at Holiday Inn.
