            Introduction of the Organization:    

 

Badin development & Research Organization (BDRO) is of non-Governmental –Organization  which is working for the socio economic empowerment of the rural peoples and striving the poverty alleviation through implication of different development program in the rural areas It was established in 2000 by a group of energetic youngsters representing the both sexes of Badin .The organization registered under Social Welfare voluntary Organization Act: 1961with Directorate of Social Welfare / Community Development Department Government of Sindh.

The Organization has been working, since its inception, on different sectors of social development focusing on Education, Agriculture, women development, youth problems and environment for the betterment of the poor and needy peoples of the area. Through their active participation and the help of various donors.

The main objective of the establishment of organization is involve and assist them in development process also research is the important tool for to knows the root causes of the problems which help in sustainable development in the programmatic areas.

This organization is based on the code of conduct that it is non-profit, non-sectarian and works with all the poor without any discrimination of caste and creed, Gender and area biases. Following are some sectors on which this organization preferentially works.

Socio-economic empowerment of the society through involvement of community to form balanced civil society.

 

Objectives:

 

q       Socio economic empowerment of the rural peoples through formation of CBOs for sustainable development initiatives in the villages

q       Involve rural communities in micro enterprise   for alleviating poverty in the rural areas

q       Improve the living standard of the rural peoples through providing them health finicalities at door step and awareness among the women children about the health hazards

q       Advocacy of the social problems and involve communities in the solution of problems

q       Mitigation of the flood disaster in the area

q       Raise literacy in the area specially girls, women, through establishment of non formal schools and adult literacy centers in the slum areas of the Cities and villages

q       Capacity Building of the rural communities through establishment of the Research Center

                       BDRO Past activities

 

1.               Free medical   camps programme

One- week free medical camps programme was organized in Badin city with the financial support 0f Marie Ad lade Leprosy centre in April 2001. Theses camps were for the patients having the problems of eyes and leprosy specialty women .About 1500 patients were treated during this programme.

 

2.               Citizen’s campaign for women Representation in Local Body election 2001.

This was women education programme, which was funded by Aurat foundation Karachi. During this programme the all Women candidates of Councilors were facilitated .A District co- ordination during this whole programme.The following major activities were carried out during this programme.

 

Ø      Information camps

Ø      Awareness workshops

Ø      Trainings programme for Candidates and voters

 

This programme continued from April 2001 to July 2001.

 

3.               Supporting Democratic Electoral Process

This was four months long campaign for the supporting Electoral process during General election 2002 funded by UNDP / SPO/BRDS Badin.  BDRO Badin was also deeply involved in all activities of this campaign with the collaboration of BRDS Badin .In this campaign, awareness workshop, seminars, election Melas, stakeholders meeting and other activities were organized in twenty Union councils of Badin in different locations i.e. This programme continued from April 2002 to July 2001.

 

4.                              Marie Stopes Society:

This organization is collaborating BDRO to established health centre in District Badin in June 2001. Such centre had been set up in Badin main city and was working very well.

 

5.                  Work during Disaster

From 24 July  2003 due to heavy rain fall and flood. There was critical situation created in the Badin District. In recent flood Badin Development & Research Organization (BDRO) Badin provided various aid services to people in its own limited capacity and worked with the SPO (Strengthening Participatory Organization) in the project of “Costal Area Disaster relief Program

 

 

 

 

Camp survey:

First of all BDRO Badin conducted a completely survey in different camps as well as affecty areas of Badin Taluka through BDRO Badin’s energetic Volunteers both Male & Female and identified actual affecties of this Disaster.

 

Distribution of food items:

Under this project BDRO provided the medicines, food, clothes and clean water at about 500 families of different villages as well as camps in Badin city with the support of SPO Sindh , Save the Children and other organizations..  

 

Medical camps:

BDRO had been running two months long free medical camps programme through SPO and world Vision different Villages of in Taluka Badin especially in affecty areas of coastal belt of Badin since the first. Under this project BDRO Badin installed 15 free Medical camps and about 4500 patients were treated and were supplied the medicines during this period.

 

Farmers Support Programme:

BDRO had formed 11 groups of farmers and provided timely agricultural inputs of the amount of 10,00000= to 157 selected small farmers in 11 groups , with the support of SPO sindh, Save the Children and ECHO Sindh Coastal rehabilitation program. Now these CBOs are running as field units of BDRO Badin and BDRO Badin is organizing its activities in theses units. 

 

Distribution of Education material;

In the last  BDRO Badin  provided educational material to 300 Primary school going children of flood affected small farmers in Taluka Badin with the support of SPO /save the children and ECHO under Sindh Coastal  rehabilitation program. Through a distribution ceremony which was organized in District council hall Badin on dated 10 January 2004, presided over by Sayed Mumtaz Ali Shah District Coordination Officer (DCO) Badin also Mr. Noor Mohammed Bajeer Regional Director SPO Sindh was the chief guest of this programme.

 

6.               Water Hand Pump project

This was two months project started form 15 may to July 15 2004 with the support of ASSA Consulting Karachi and USAID Under self-help Programme. Under this project 15 hand pumps were installed in 05 different villages of coastal belt of Taluka Badin. The total beneficiaries of this project were 2800.

 

 

 

 

 

     7.    Adult literacy centers:

 

BDRO Badin was running 40 Adult Literacy Centers 12 Union councils of Taluka Badin with the help of Education Department Badin and National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) Badin. This project was started form July 2004. These centers were especially for women. Under this project about 2000 Women   read   and write easy their names after competition of three months Adult Graduation course.

 

 

 

  8.       Micro Enterpriser Development Programme

 

BDRO Badin had started Micro Enterpriser Development Programme with the help of National commission for Human Development (NCHD) Badin. This programme had been started from June 2004. Under this programme 40 trainees were completed theirs   training. The participants were learnt about objectives, scope, purpose, old and new methods, methodologies, skills of micro enterpriser. Through these workshops 40 trainees were completed training.  After getting the training majority of trainees (25) have started their micro enterprisers in Badin city   and BDRO Badin were responsible for reporting and monitoring of these trainees.

 

              9. Citizen’s Campaign for Women Representation CCWR ii in Local Body election 2005.

This was women education programme on local body election 2005, which was funded by Aurat foundation Karachi. During this programme the all Women candidates of Councilors were facilitated .A District co- ordination committee was formed for better implementation of this programme during this whole programme the following major activities were carried out during this programme.

BDRO in Survey

 

MICS Survey

This survey started on October 06, 2003.  Multiple indicator cluster survey Sindh 2003 worked for the collection information about house hold modules, house hold identification, house hold characteristics, house hold utilize, School and management committee, house hold members, education module, agriculture income worksheet, house value, remittances and Zakat with the help of UNICEF & through Govt of Sindh . House hold expenditure work sheet, health, education, Salt iodization, water and sanitation, adult mortality module, child mortality module birth and death, children under 5 yrs illness. It works in urban and rural in district Badin. . There are two teams form BDRO in this survey having 04 female and two male and one supervisor. This survey is completed on January 1, 2004.   

 

Media Survey

Media survey started on January, 15, 2004 in the collaboration with GALLUP. Team of this survey consisted on three members. The survey areas were five Talkas of Badin district. The nature of this survey was to collect the information about articles of daily use life including the income and expenditure of their family. This survey finished on January, 19, 2004

 

Health & Hygiene Survey

This survey was conducted in October to November 2001 in eight district of Badin through Gallup survey of Pakistan .This survey was focused on Health & hygiene. There were 12 team members were participated in this survey. 

 

Polio Monitoring Survey

This was one week long survey on polio monitoring through Gallup survey of Pakistan. This survey was conducted in 49 Union councils of Badin district. 10 male & female members form BDRO Badin Participated in this survey 

 

Relief Research / Interviews 

Research survey on Politics of Relief as Experienced by people of Badin after 2003 rainfall and flood Disaster from Federal flood commission through Pattan development Organization Islamabad and BDRO Badin.  Members collected the Data from communities, through PRA tools and techniques and conduct the interviews with Nazims, NGO’s representatives, line department, and monitoring / evolution regarding relief work after 2003 rainfall and flood Disaster in Badin district especially in coastal belt of Badin in July 2004.

 


 

Post Flood Survey

Red Crescent Karachi conducted a one week survey in August 2004 on post flood assessment in coastal belt of Badin especially in three Union Councils of Taluka Badin. Five members form BDRO Badin participated in this survey.

 

 

                 Current Running Activities

 

1.         Information Network   Centers (for women)

Information center established by the BRDO for women in peer Malook Shah Muhalla and Seerani Badin city .In These centers un educated women have would been aware regarding the current information and small literacy and food methods.

 

2.         Blood Donation Information center (especially for women)

A Blood Donation information center is running at BDRO head office. Where blood needy peoples contact and inform about the blood donors. This center working as resource center in the area and it reducing the difficulties in the emergency.

 

3.         Vocational center

Vocational Center is running with the support of SPO / Sindh Social Welfare council, Small Grant by the organization in the Memon Muhalla Badin city. In this center currently 26 Women including young girls getting skills of sewing, Designing, Cutting. Now days BDRO has signed agreement with The Asia Foundation Pakistan Badin. Under this agreement BDRO will provide the skill development training to local women TB Patients of Badin city. 

 

4.         Resource Centre for Women Councilors:

BDRO Badin has established a Resource centre with help of Aurat Foundation Karachi at Service Centre Building Badin. The Resource centre is working Since July, 2004. The basic purpose of this Resource Centre is to provide strong coordination and Training facilities to local Women councilors of Badin district.

 

5.         BDRO Resource Centre:

BDRO Badin has established a BDRO Resource Centre in BDRO Office Badin. This Resource Centre is working since June 2003. The basic purpose of this resource Centre is to facilitate local NGOs, CBO, CCBs and local Development professionals. Following facilities are available in this Resource Centre:

6.         Salvadora percica Protection Project through awareness raising and alternative livelihood practices.

            BDRO Badin is running this project with the financial support of UNDP under GEF Small Grant Program .The main objective of the project is to preserve the vanishing tree of Salvadora (percica) in the Taluka Badin especially in coastal are of Badin.  This project is intended to aware the people of 12 union councils of Taluka Badin where the poor tree is under great threat to be rooted out in near future.

 

7.                     NGO Net For women and Children Rights:

BDRO is also working with KISSA DIMETRA a Greek organization under the NGO Net for the Rights of Women and Children. Under this project there are 40 member NGOs are in Pakistan .BDRO is also active member of this project. For ore detail pleases visit www.netb, , az.org.

G.        Organizational Structure

 

Organization has a general Body which comprised on 52 members including 18 female members. Organization has Executive committee of 10 members which is the responsible for planning and reviews of the organizational activities and give suggestions. There are six office bearers who are responsible to implement the organization program.

 

H.        Financial Resource of the Organization

 

BDRO has got small funding from SPO and Sindh Social; welfare Council for Vocational Center, Funding from UNDP for SPARAL Project and other financial Resources are the monthly membership fee and support of local philanthropists.
